The birth of Annabelle Choke and others!

The pieces of Art work that I have produced over this year is based on the theme and idea of horror. I have looked at the work of Tim Burton who creates unusual weird characters and puts them into stories and films which could be seen as scary to small children, and I have studied the art of horror films produced by Stephen King and others.

Tim Burton - Corpse Bride

Stephen King -  It
I try to incorporate the sense of fear and uncertainty into my work by creating characters though a system that I think is relevant to films. I have used different media to try and bring across the same feeling of fear, vulnerability and uncertainty which are main components to all horror films.

My work consists of 3D work, animation, photography and painting and all have an important element to them, they must all have some sort of narrative even if it is only a small narrative compared to others these Art pieces explore a range of medias such as acetate, computer mouse mats, stretched canvas, fabric, collage and digital media. I have explored the idea of fear and terror in my work titled "Annabelle Choke" this is a piece of work that was influenced by the strange yet interesting work on Tim Burton along with the ideas that are portrayed in horror films as she looks scary, yet as you go through the narrative attached to her character you see something different to what you expect from something that looks violent, unnatural, ugly and strange.

These are some of my earlier ideas which were influenced by Artists such as Tim Burton and Stephen King. It is obvious that such artists' work is heavily influenced by a dark mind, depression, a disturbia of the mind. Other influences can be found in the works of Francis Bacon with his use of light and shadow to create extreme contrast [Portrait of Pope Innocent X] and surreal, deformed figures [Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion].

From the surreal, fantasy horror of Tim Burton and others, I then looked at more "traditional" horror that is seen in more mainstream media, and a strong theme seemed to be kidnap. The photo above and below are my own works to try and portray the realistic nature of such an ordeal - fear and apprehension. I decided the medium of photography was the most suitable as many stalkers photograph their victims for months, or even years before they attack.

Dominic Rouse is another particular artist i think had influenced my work as I first came across his strange Art a few years back. His work to me, seems to push boundaries and is still quite suppressed compared to other forms of Art. I think to produce work like of a disturbing nature, we have to be slightly disturbed ourselves.
